Taking its name from the Japanese word for the sea urchin, a Japanese delicacy, UNI brings the vibrant colours, flavours and textures of Peruvian and Japanese fusion cuisine (known as Nikkei) to Belgravia.
Offering a mouth watering selection of grilled meats and fish; succulent Wagyu beef and juicy black cod, the highest quality sushi and sashimi, and an inventive selection of tempura and maki. The Peruvian influence is noticeable in the anticucho sauce with the black cod, as well as the ceviche and tiraditos peruano.
We were eager to give this imaginative fusion a go and ordered cocktails to set us on the journey, sipping a lychee martini and pisco sour as we made our food choices which we ended up seeking advise for from our very helpful waiter. We ordered quite a selection from the curated menu including a fresh and tasty spicy tuna tartare with guacamole, an interesting combination of black cod and prawn Gyoza, a beautifully presented and equally tasty yellow tail tiraditos and popcorn shrimp to start. For the main we went for the standout and we hear chef’s favourite miso black cod with Peruvian anticucho sauce plus the Wagyu beef.
To wash all of this deliciousness down we ordered a sake from their extensive menu to keep with the Japanese tradition – we’d already dabbled with the South American side with our Pisco Sour earlier!!
Nikkei is a new taste profile for us and an interesting concept that actually works really well and one we’ll be revisiting very soon.
