The Rookery, nestled in the heart of Clerkenwell, remains my favourite place to staycate in London.
It is discreet, beautifully-appointed and oozing with charm.
On stepping into the 18th century property, you’re transported to a world of silks, brocade and finely polished wood.
To enter the building, you must press a doorbell to enter the homely reception area.
I checked in on a sunny Sunday afternoon, and as ever, the staff were personable yet professional.
I was shown to a room on the first floor.
All of the chambers are named after historic figures in the area, and I was shown to one dedicated to Henry Bennett-Smith, who was a prestigious surgeon.
I’d returned to the Rookery to check it out after a small makeover.
The rooms have been given a fresh lick of paint, with new carpeting in some, and they all now feature handy USB charging outlets next to the beds.
As with the previous rooms I’d stayed in, the Henry Bennett-Smith had everything to see me through the day, including a well-stocked minibar, a stack of reading material perching on the fireplace and a flatscreen TV hiding in one of the antique cupboards should the mood strike.
Other perks included fluffy white robes, slippers and delicious-smelling REN products in the bathroom.
Our bathroom included a deep tub, rain shower and shuttered window with a view to the cobbled streets below.
Before we ventured out for dinner, a member of staff brought us a tea tray – another of my favourite quirks at The Rookery – with a kettle, a pot of fresh tea leaves, milk and a little flower in a vase to add a splash of colour.
During your stay you MUST indulge in the honesty bar.
After we returned from dinner, we ventured to the downstairs living room and rustled ourselves up a punchy Old Fashioned before retiring by the fire.
There was also a recipe for the ‘cocktail of the day’, but we decided to keep things simple.
Another recommendation at this hotel is the breakfast in bed.
Before we fell into a deep sleep in the plush antique bed, we filled out the little morning menu and left it on our door.
I had to dash to work early in the morning, but the Rookery team were kindly able to deliver a spread of treats at 6:15am.
The smoked salmon bagels and fresh breads are sublime and if I wasn’t working, the Bloody Mary would have gone down a treat.
The Rookery is as charming as ever, with an extra feather in its cap thanks to its recent fettling.
It’s always hard leaving this little slice of quiet calm, back into the London scramble…
The Rookery is located at 12 Peter’s Ln, Clerkenwell, London EC1M 6DS
