A night at The Rookery was definitely my top London staycation experience to date.
A four-poster bed, an honesty bar, a secret patio, a copper free standing bathtub… need I say more.
This elegant, discreet homestay is tucked away in the historical neighbourhood of Clerkenwell.
Adding to its allure is its convenient location next Farringdon tube station, the Barbican and St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Perched on a quiet street corner, The Rookery is terribly unassuming from the outside.
But once inside, the place quickly casts its magic and transports you back in time. The building dates back to 18th century and the interiors are oozing with period charm.
We were shown to the Theophilus Garencieres room – named after a 17th century physician – a large suite boasting a living room area big enough to waltz around, a four-poster bed and separate bathroom.
Other key features included a sturdy writing desk, two TVs and two mini bars stocked with an array of goodies including Berry Bros wine.
Taking adventure of the complimentary tea service, we indulged in a pot of fresh earl grey before heading out to dinner near Ladbroke Grove.
We returned to the hotel around 11pm with everything as we left it.
Stepping into the quiet calm with a clock ticking somewhere in the background, we indulged in a nightcap from the honesty bar, opting for one Baileys on ice and a Black Russian concoction.
Back in the room, my partner Nick swiftly fell asleep in the grasp of the soft, malleable bed.
Feeling rather spritely after my Black Russian, I decided to have a midnight bath, taking time to shave my legs thanks to a razor kindly delivered by reception. The bathroom was fully stocked with a fresh-smelling array of REN products and a small bottle of essential rose oil was a winning touch.
Climbing into the four-poster after my indulgent scrub, I quickly joined Nick in the land of nod.
The next morning we awoke with the daylight pouring into the room and the flashing shadows of local commuters making their way to work.
Determined to stay in my magic land I drew the thick silk curtains shut and greeted two butlers who carried in our breakfast.
Two wooden trays were stacked with a spread of goodies we’d selected the night before. Two super fresh smoothies – one green, one pink – smoked salmon bagels, a generous bread basket and a giant bowl of berries, yogurt and granola. The smell of fresh coffee further roused the appetite.
The Rookery is a slice of indulgence well worth dipping into.
Bathed, shaved, showered with a good night’s sleep and amply fed, I tumbled back to the streets ready to tackle the stairs of St Paul’s cathedral up to the roof.
I was still entranced by a sense of romanticism and visions of snuggling in a four-poster bed. The Rookery definitely takes you on a very memorable flight of fancy.
