You know us well enough to know that on Wednesday morning any last-minute weekend plans are nailed (FYI weekends start on Wednesday night here in the Rude office). Where will we eat, where will we drink, which venue will play backdrop to an impromptu soireé; a meeting of cocktails, friends and mouth watering food… Which corner of culture can we slip into and completely immerse in sounds, sights and flavours that’ll leave us wondering whether we’re even still in London?
As luck would have it (that’s your luck as well as ours) tonight and the next few nights mark the last chance for lovers of all things Italy to savour this summer’s smoothest pop-up, The House of Peroni, which has taken over the capital this summer by wooing guests with a taste of Italian style at its new home – Proud East, Haggerston.
Since May, guests at The House have been deep diving into this year’s experience, ‘Amare L’Italia’, translated as ‘for the Love of Italy’. Evenings have been filled with culinary masterclasses, mixology classes and pasta making. All wrapped up in a beautiful immersive space designed by none other than Margherita Maccapani Missoni, who else could better provide a visual feast of Italian style and inspiration? Some guests have even been arriving by gondola. And the food – we said we’d book ourselves in for another round and we weren’t lying.
We know what you’re thinking, have I missed all the good stuff? You can’t take a gondola along the canal this week – save that for Venice – but there’s still a multisensory journey of Italian sights, smells and tastes to be enjoyed. Admission is free and walk ins are welcomed.
At the time of this post going live you can still bag a place at Residency Experience ‘The House of Peroni – Cicchetti’. Italian small dishes inspired by Residency Master of Taste Francesco Mazzei, whose cooking is inspired by southern Italian cooking and celebrates the abundance of his homeland’s rich ingredients. Dishes start at a before-pay-day-friendly £6 each. Take a peek at the menu here. Book your place here.
Cicchetti dishes include Pollo Calabrese (chicken with spicy nduja sausage), Fritto di Pesce (fried cod fillet, above), Arancini (pasta crocchette with chilli jam, above), freshly made pasta, Affettati Misti sharing platters and Polppettine (lamb meatballs). If the handmade hazelnut gelato ice cream from the Gelateria doesn’t have you swooning, the Caramello Salato E Popcorn – salted caramel ice cream with popcorn and polenta chips(!), will.
The House of Peroni ends Friday 1st July
Open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: 5pm – 11pm
