Following the thriving Camden venue, The Blues Kitchen has finally arrived in Shoreditch and occupies a warehouse-sized space on Curtain Road. With the thrum of a toasty Tennessee stamping ground, nightly live music (except on Sundays) flaunts an impressive amalgamation of Blues, Swing and Rock’n’Roll acts during the week, followed by Soul, Motown and a spot of Honky Tonk piano at the weekend.
With over 100 types of bourbon, archetypal American craft beers such as Brooklyn and Dixie and a packed cocktail collection on offer, it’s hard to know where to start. We kicked off with a Dirty Mojito, which replaces rum with a Four Roses Bourbon and lime with lemon to create a smokier, American take on the classic. The creamy Clover Club (Beefeater Gin, lemon, grenadine and egg-white) and the good old Margarita – complete with enough salt frosting to ward off even the most stubborn evil spirits – were our firm favourites.
The menu is made up of Southern soul food at its best. With Seafood Jambalaya, Ribs and Pan Fried Catfish amongst the restaurant’s best-sellers, it’s easy to avoid the timeless burger if you want to be a little more adventurous. To start the culinary proceedings, we tried the deliciously smooth Spinach, Artichoke and Parmesan Dip with tortilla chips and the Seafood Platter, consisting of Canadian lobster, jumbo shrimp and Cornish crab claws. Served with chipotle mayo and a variety of dips, it was as tasty with just a drizzle of lemon.
If you want to sample a little of all the organic barbeque meats, it’s best to order the Deluxe BBQ Blow Out for two. We went for sweet potato fries on the side, and the 16-hour slow smoked beef ribs were the undisputed winners of the evening. The Superfood Salad not only eased our guilt, but smacked us with its unique flavour fusions. Smoked butternut squash, dragon fruit, pomegranate, grapefruit, edamame, radish and stilton together yields something pretty special.
