Stepping into the Bloomsbury Club Bar feels like stepping into a scene from The Great Gatsby; atmospheric lighting sets the tone, with beautiful hostesses swishing round in fringing and feathers and male waitstaff looking dapper in waistcoats and tweed.
Taking influence from the 1920s & 1930s, they have encapsulated these decades perfectly, whisking you back to a bygone era we all wish we were a part of. Well for one night you can be; sip a classy cocktail in their seductive bar or drink al fresco on their spacious terrace.
The cocktails also take influence from this era, with forgotten recipes bought back to life. The Gin & Milk was delicious and although I was skeptical at first, it soon won me over and had me reaching for another. The Mary Pickford, filled with Havana rum, pineapple juice, Chambord and Marashino Liqueur was exactly my kind of cocktail. You won’t be short of things to drink here – as well as their incredible cocktail menu, they host a broad range of spirits including over 60 different whiskies. You can also buy authentic Cuban cigars at the bar, which rounds off the golden era experience.
You may be offered oysters served from a bucket flavoured with tabasco, lemon juice and seasoning. These are served alongside their other menu bites, including salt & pepper squid, tuna tartar and courgette fries. Everything we tried was delicious and a perfect compliment to the drinks list.
The venue is seriously slick; they run a smooth operation with their knowledgeable staff on hand to help with drink orders, cigar options and food menus. There’s only one problem, unless you’ve happened to don your full flapper-girl outfit, expect the staff to be significantly more glamourous than you. The area of Bloomsbury was crying out for a bar like this. The Bloomsbury Club Bar is the perfect place to enjoy a fine cocktail in sophisticated surroundings.
