If you’re getting sober for October, there’s no reason to avoid a well-concocted beverage. Soft drink and mixer experts at iconic Schweppes have come up with a selection of delicious ‘mocktails’, created by award-winning mixologist JJ Goodman.
Schweppes are championing easy and inventive mocktail making for this month and beyond, with simple recipes to try using ingredients you’ll find at home. Minimal effort meets maximum taste.
We caught up with pioneer of the contemporary London bar scene and founder of the London Cocktail Club, JJ Goodman, to find out a bit more about his life and the world of mocktails (and cocktails, of course).
Where are you and what are you doing today?
Lunch at Quo Vadis. Dinner in Hakkasan discussing world domination.
What inspired you to get into mixology and bartending? What excites you about it?
Passion, creativity, and the team unity you get from a global family of people.
Right now I’d kill for a salted caramel espresso martini!
Savoury or sweet?
Sour. My pallet loves citric, but I often get a sweet tooth.
Do any particular artists or ideas inspire your work?
We did an art series inspired by Hirst and Pollock. The drinks that came out were incredible.
What are your favorite hangouts in London and worldwide?
I just got back from New York. “Employees only” has to my favourite bar in the world. As for London, the Craft Cocktail Co. in Bethnal green is my new bestie.
How can we make amazing cocktails and mocktails at home on a budget?
Understand the basics of taste and balance: quality products are available anywhere these days at an affordable price.
The Schweppes range does just that for me. It’s versatile with incredible flavours from tart to sweet to make the perfect tasting drinks. My tip is to ALWAYS get more lemon juice than you think you need and make use of items lying around in the kitchen. I crafted the Schweppes Spring Mocktail using strawberry jam!
What’s in store for the next year?
Mocktails, actually. Sampling neat spirits next to complementary juice blends, like the Sangrita, is a pro’s way to drink.
What’s your idea of a perfect night out?
If I see my friends dancing on tables to 90’s hip hop, I’m confident the nights going really well…
What was the last thing that really made you stop and stare?
I didn’t get her name, but hopefully I’ll know it one day.
