This venue is not hard to find as long as you keep your eyes sharp. After 3 flights of wooden interior, abundant swirling inscence and peeping heads around corners, i’m finally greeted. Chinatown has come a long way since the Opium dens of the late 19th Century. Now Gerrard Street is home to the latest concept by Dre Masso& Eric Yu: Opium boasts 9 distinct rooms, this Opium is a den for more salubrious pursuits: fine dining and drinking.
The mixology is prescribed by Dre Masso. Extensively travelled, Masso is always collecting liquid inspirations from China. He adds an apothecary feel of the main bar, you’ll even discover a chi-enhancing herb or two amongst the classics. Changing seasonally, in parallel with the drinks list, the menu will also include guest chef collaborations. St John has created Legend of St John for November – a take on Siu long bao which marries Shanghai street-food and Michelin-star dining.
