If not lucky enough to be born with Bambi eyelashes and find gluing fake ones on every time a night out is on the menu a bit of a bore, then no doubt you have considered eyelash extensions. There is a variety of professional extensions on the market, with vast majority being either as much of a nuisance to look after as glue-on ones or just damaging to your eyes. But there are also those that can make your eyes pop with life, suit even the most sensitive of eyes and in the end can save you a lot of time.
Ruthie Belle, an eyelash extension artist based out of AWAY Spa at W London Hotel on Leicester Square, offers Mink extensions as an alternative to fake lashes. The light and easy Mink lashes will leave you looking gorgeous with minimum time spent on eye make-up from the moment you wake until your head hits the pillow at night. Mink lashes have taken the world by storm in the last year – made of real mink fur (which artists claim has been brushed off live animals, but have still not managed to get PETA’s seal of approval) it is the favourite look of Hollywood starles and divas. Ruthie however prefers to use synthetic lashes as they look and feel the same, but produce a better curl.
Mink lashes are suitable for everyone even if you have sensitive eyes. The adhesive does not touch the skin, and medical grade bonding formulas suit those with allergies. The Mink extensions cover your own lashes and need to be ‘touched up’ every 2,5 – 3 weeks to maintain the natural look and feel of the end result. If not sure whether you would like to look like Betty Boop or Jennifer Lopez, Ruthie is most helpful at the initial consultation to help you choose the style most suitable for you and your lifestyle.
I’m a clothes horse. I live in a cardboard village made of shoeboxes and I have called in sick from work, when my favourite sweater was a casualty in a war between the washing machine and the water in it. As a stark contrast, I just finished using an eyeshadow that I purchased 2 years ago. It did not break – I actually used it up. I have a personal relationship with my wardrobe (which has not done much good for the actual relationships in my life), but I do not believe in spending much time or money on beauty products. That does not however mean that I would like to look as such. When I first heard of the Mink Lash procedure at the AWAY Spa, I knew I had to try it. After a 6 month consultation with my diary to fit in the 1,5hr procedure, I head over to the deliciously harmonious Spa at the hotel just days before the start of London Fashion Week, the busiest time of my year.
The procedure itself was a rather pleasant experience despite the length of it. Having Ruthie work on my lashes meant that I had to keep my eyes shut for the whole duration of the procedure (thankfully it wasn’t my mouth I had to keep shut) and neglect the extension of my hand, the mobile phone. The latter meant that I was actually able to take an afternoon nap for the first time for as long as I can remember. Based on the initial consultation and our mutual conclusion that I would suit best natural looking extensions, I left the salon looking and feeling fresh. Ruthie sent me on the road with a special brush to look after the lashes and other than a few DO NOT-s, there was not much she forbade me until my next visit.
Being a person with a busy lifestyle and sometimes ridiculously long hours, which see me start the day at 7.30 in trainers and finish it at 1am in a pair of stilettos, getting lash extensions may well be one of my most practical beauty decisions. If the initial 1,5hr long procedure seemed like a journey to the Galapagos and back, then the time saved applying mascara every morning and constantly re-applying it through the day more than made up for it. Not to mention the perks one gets with just a bat of an eyelash.
