ON THE ROOF WITH…Q: New Rooftop Pop Up Restaurant from Selfridges and Des McDonald

Having booked our visit to On The Roof With…Q, the new rooftop concept from department store Selfridges, several weeks in advance, we witnessed the rainy skies with a feeling of impending doom, willing summer to kick in before we were to head five floors up for dinner under the open skies.

Luckily, the day we headed for Selfridges was bright sunshine (we also later discovered that there’s a retractable roof to protect diners from any sudden downpours, so don’t let the rain put you off), so we boarded the express lift Charlie-and-the-Chocolate-Factory-style to the fifth floor ready to check out London’s new (worst-kept) secret rooftop garden.

On The Roof with…Q is a collaboration between Selfridges and restaurateur Des McDonald. The result is an 18-week pop up restaurant which promises to transport customers high above the streets of London, for a unique outdoor dining and drinking experience.

The rooftop garden at Selfridges has been transformed into a grand Victoria greenhouse. With grass underfoot, foliage lining the edges of the garden and an open frame work structure surrounding the restaurant; it feels like a mini-Eden above London’s bustling streets.

We kicked of proceedings with two fittingly named cocktails; Secret Garden and English Summer Spritz, both were refreshing and went perfectly with our sharing platter of Butternut Squash Hummus and Charred Flat Bread, so good we almost ordered a second portion.

Next up was Sea Bass Ceviche with Spiced Plantain. The fresh, zingy sea bass was delicious, and the spiced plantain brought a welcome crunch to the dish. The main event was a Flat Iron Steak with Peppercorn Butter and Chips, alongside a glass of the house red. This was pure meaty deliciousness, which tasted even better under the sunshine. We shared the Lemon Posset and Peppercorn Shortbread and Chocolate Caramel Torte for dessert. Both were indulgent, crowd-pleasing dishes which we’d challenge anyone not to finish.

The entire menu at On The Roof With…Q is just that, crowd-pleasing. Classic, simple dishes spruced up with touches of zing and spice, all served in a unique summer-time setting.
