Oblix Restaurant at the Shard has been open a while now (since May 2013) and has long been on our wish list so we jumped at the opportunity to check out their new lounge menu; a carefully selected menu of small plates including an eclectic fusion of American, Asian and Mediterranean dishes. Set on the 32nd floor of the Shard and with a wonderful London skyline backdrop the test was to see if the food and drinks at Oblix were as good as the view – we’re pleased to report that it most definitely did not disappoint!
We started our experience with a glass of bubbles (celebrating the fact we finally made it here) and then began our journey of small plates with a delicious, melt-in-your-mouth, lobster tail. This was followed by a delicious iceberg salad with blue cheese and pecans (not gonna lie, we’re not huge fans of leafy things but that was quite possibly the tastiest iceberg salad we’ve ever had), after which we tried a beautiful octopus, avocado and grapefruit plate of goodness. Continuing the seafood journey we tried crab cake with lemon marmalade and then a buttery lobster brioche roll that was the perfect mix of lobster, celery & espelette. We finally ended our small plates with a truffle, ricotta, pancetta and maple onion flat bread.
For the main event we had the ultimate meat feast; grilled bone-in rib-eye, asparagus and gnudi with ricotta and mushrooms. Positively stuffed and content we moved our attention to the drinks – following our bubbles with dessert wine which was literally liquid heaven. Dessert was a mango and sorbet platter; the perfect end to our culinary extravaganza.
Dinner finished we moved over to the bar to try some cocktails. First up, we tried one of the aged cocktails, the very potent rusty nail, which comes in decanters displayed behind the bar that can be bought for £750 to have at the table with friends. The friendly bar man even got experimental and made us a unique cocktail; vodka, fizz and lemon with silver speckles – truly a treat, we named this a ‘Dmitriji special’ after the bar man.
Full of food and slightly tipsy we were thoroughly satisfied with our experience, we booked ourselves an uber and headed home happy – Oblix you were worth the wait!!
