Many of us working in the creative industries want to explore the vast range that London has to offer when it comes to food, drink and venues with a difference. But most of the creative industries are renowned for lower pay, making it difficult to do just that.
We have seen discount cards before, but Nightkey is a new concept. Designed with London’s creatives in mind, entrepreneurs Fin Munro and Philip Jacobs have created a members only (invitation or application) card which gives you 30% off at many of the city’s best bars.
Key to its appeal is the continuity. Every partnering bar (from Oskar’s Bar in Dabbous to 5cc in Hoxton) offers 30% off every cocktail on the menu most days of the week. You can also get this discount on house wine and beer.
We took to top Fitzrovia restaurant Dabbous’ bar to see how the card worked and quickly realised what Nightkey are setting out to achieve. It didn’t seem like the sort of place we would ordinarily be able to afford. A chic basement hideaway, this bar feels miles away from the busy London streets outside. The industrial interiors make it a minimal haven with exposed brickwork and a distinctly Scandinavian feel.
Spearheaded by Oskar Kinberg who is known for his surprising but sophisticated concoctions, deciding what to try is immensely difficult. We love the ‘Dillusion’: a freshy and herby combination of Beefeater gin, cucumber, dill, elderflower and lemon, all shaken up. At £9.50, it’s a drink we may not usually consider. But at £6.65, it feels a lot more affordable.
So… fancy getting your key cut?
The Nightkey card is free for the first three months. After that, the yearly fee for founding members will be £39. (That’s the equivalent of just six Dillusion cocktails from Oskar’s Bar by the way). Founding membership closes on Dec 31st 2014.
