NEIL BARRETT – “BLURRING THE BORDERS”:
To celebrate the launch of Neil Barrett’s new web store, the Milan-based British designer released a short film in collaboration with Dazed Digital. Styled by Dazed’s Katie Shillingford and featuring the transgender model Anrej Pejic, the film is an exploration of fashion’s relationship with the (blurred) borders of masculinity and femininity.
Barrett, who formerly designed menswear collections for Gucci and Prada, set up on his own with a menswear line in 1999, which was followed by womenswear in 2006. He is known for his superb tailoring and minimalist aesthetic, with the perfectionist approach to cut and fabric often “thrown” by unconventional punk or grunge influences. He is the favourite on and off the red carpet for many A-listers, including Chris Martin, Ewan McGregor and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Barrett on the film: “It visualises how the men and women’s garments are intertwined; one influenced or derived from the other, and vice-versa. A cross-reference of colour and textures and forms. From woman to man and back. The hybrid has always been the most influential concept in my designs”
