Martello Hall is an interior designers dream, think steampunk glamour in a converted warehouse spread over three floors. I’d been looking for a new opening that inspires me to become a regular and this is it, an impressive and entertaining spread out over a bar/ banquet hall, restaurant with wood fire oven and private cocktail lounge with DJ’s which is seductive and exclusive.
A fan installation with moving cogs snaps your attention on arrival off East London’s Mare Street in Hackney, entering their bar which is adorned with a copper gin distillery area, a sliding bar menu and wines on tap, including a rare breed white wine from Sussex! The reclaimed wooden features, double bench chairs and wooden furniture are unusual and retro.
Serving Pizza’s and Italian sharing plates and cocktails until 3am, there’s no wonder this place was rammed, in fact heaving by 9.30pm. The dough at Martello Hall is fluffy just as it should be, try their Truffle Pizza if your feeling naughty or their healthier twists combining beetroot puree and mint.
The cooking is centred on natural fuel, with a wood oven and charcoal grill delivering East Coast pizza, weekend brunch with Italian roots and sharing dishes. Their homemade pestos and pickles were a treat to the tastebuds, as was the burrata, and then their very very naughty Italian doughnuts.
The bar team’s passion lies with a focus on Gin, Absinthe and true classic cocktails in their original form. All of which can be enjoyed from with high chairs set off from their fabulous industrial bar where you can perch and choose from over 12 wines on tap, very unusual! Their upstairs cocktail bar has an inspiring selection of top London vinyl DJ’s and live bands l from 9pm to late. Enjoy devotional boogie and disco edits of the classics from across the decade until the early hours.
Martello Hall is open 7 days a week from early morning through to 3am at weekends, catering to your whole day. During the week you can also purchase a day pass for £10 which will give you access to bottomless coffee and use of the upstairs cocktail lounge for hot-desking. Monthly membership of £25 is there for those ready to become regulars.
