Despite the growth in the number of Peruvian-style and Mexican inspired restaurants in London, it seems that as their supply increases, so does their demand, with Latin American food gaining greater and greater exposure. Ceviche is now a foodie staple, with Pisco sours making their way to house cocktail lists and Mezcal gaining a place above whiskey for many Londoners. If you still haven’t experienced the stunning colours, presentation and flavour contrasts of South American drinking and dining then you will be in for a treat if you make it to the newly opened Leicester Square Kitchen.
Discretely offset in bustling Leicester Square, this flavour pot fuses contemporary Mexican and Peruvian small share plates, inviting a social and playful dining experience. The interior has an open plan kitchen so the delicious smells waft across the room, a design choice that works as well aesthetically as it does philosophically. The overall design is crisp, simplistic and modern with black brick walls, uniform tables and tan leather and wooden industrial chairs with low lighting.
We tried a variety of excellent dishes but in particular favoured the Sea bass Ceviche with avocado, white corn and red onion, as well as the Mayan-spiced marinated chicken with coriander, black lime, garlic salsa and cayenne pepper mayo. If you’re your not on a first date then make sure you order the grilled corn on the cob, chilli lime, cayenne pepper and Mexican cream cheese, which was enjoyable messy between friends.
On the weekend the atmosphere gets elevated with DJ’s to heighten the experience making this an excellent perfect pre-party spot. Their pisco sours and mescal picante cocktail will surely also further your vibe.
Desserts draw on fragrant flavours, both of which we were going to skip as we were so full, but on the waiter insistence we tried two warm Chapon chocolate doughnuts, caramelised pistachio & dulce de leche ice cream, which blew our minds and capped off an excellent meal in a proper fashion.
