All aboard the very British and very fabulous new Victorian themed Hoxley and Porter, Islington’s latest Cocktail Bar/Restaurant. It’s the Orient Express meets Colonial chic with a touch of Indiana Jones to be exact! From the carriage themed dining area to the impeccably Victorian themed bar, one really gets the sense they are far removed from the after work, drunken madness and real estate frenzied streets of Angel outside.
Suitably named after “Porter-a diamond so exquisite that since its discovery in 1880, has inspired riches, ruin and royalty.” Decadent and dramatic, just like the lethal cocktails we’re treated to upon arrival, a seriously tantalising Gin Chili Sour, the other a rum tinged classic Old Fashioned served in a perfectly vintage crystal glass, and with others on the menu such as “Thyme of gentility” and “Caribbean inception” on the menu, fusing ingredients like fried plantain fat-washed gold rum, lime juice, a touch of over proof white rum and molasses syrup, you’d be hard pressed not to be impressed here.
A couple of gorgeous starters including seared scallops with a truffle jus, plus a mouth watering fresh Ricotta, Honey and Blood Orange Salad, whet our appetite for the truly delicious mains to come. A perfectly cooked seared fillet of beef, with kale and a potato and squash gratin was modern British at its best. The pan fried sea bream with sautéed baby spinach and shrimp was a stand out, a subtle nod to the exotic influences on display tonight.
After a group of chic, 20 something gals on the town, are shown to their birthday table behind us, we decide it’s time for desert to complete the already wonderful dining experience. One salted caramel Hoxley Sundae and another absolutely divine Vanilla Panna Cotta later, we are officially swayed, satisfied and ready for another ride on the Hoxley and Porter express.
