The newly refurbished cult burger and sandwich grill Kua ‘Aina (www.kua-aina.co.uk), and favorite haunt of US President Barack Obama, has crossed the oceans from Hawaii and launched in London after decades serving traditional surfer cuisine in America’s 50th state.
I am always excited to discover a new venue that takes me to another mental space. This is the perfect Soho escape to meet a friend for a hearty catch up. Kua ‘Aina oozes holiday happy vibes with rainbow colors. The waiters are full of positive chi, wearing Hawaiian style shirts, serving to the sound of background reggae music. Follow the ‘To the Beach’ sign and you can take a snug-booth downstairs where you will feel the vibes!!! The walls, doors, stairs are all painted with bright colors. Feast on their char-grilled Mahi Mahi sandwich, sweet potato chips and infamous burgers.
Kua ’Aina in London is Europe’s first of its kind. It is based on the original restaurant on Hawaii’s North Shore which opened in 1975.“Kua ‘Aina” translates literally as the “back country” but is more usually used to describe an awkward or unsophisticated person from the country (a country bumpkin or hick). For native Hawaiians it refers more to those who actively lived Hawaiian culture and kept the spirit of the land alive.
