One of our favourite restaurant groups, Hakkasan, is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the original Hakkasan in London’s Hanway Place by launching local Only At dishes and cocktails. Since the first Hakkasan opened in London, eleven restaurants have opened globally in the UK, China, India, US and Middle East. All eleven Hakkasan restaurants will feature a selection of small eats, main dishes, desserts and cocktails that will form the innovative Only At collection. These menus will change twice a year and have a strong emphasis on seasonality, highlighting the originality of each Hakkasan restaurant around the world.
Not that we ever need an excuse to visit Hakkasan, but this news gave us the perfect opportunity to revisit and sample their unique new offering which represent the individuality of each restaurant and its location (featuring dishes and cocktails exclusive to each restaurant).
We headed over to the Mayfair restaurant to try out the Only At Bruton menu which like the others is inspired by local culture and cuisine, using seasonal ingredients whilst still using Hakkasan’s modern Chinese cooking techniques.
We’re greeted by our lovely host for the evening, a charming and knowledgeable Mirelle who answers all of our menu questions with ease, before bringing us a round of cocktails to start our culinary journey. We order a delicious Thea Martini (Zubrowka Bison grass vodka, ginger, vanilla chilli sugar, apple and lime) and a flavoursome yet lethal sounding Harmony Tea Punch (Tapatio Reposado tequila, Amaretto, Fino sherry, kar lime leaves, agave nectar, chamomile foam) and await what surprises Mirelle brings us. We’re letting her choose for us and she tells us she’ll mix it up with a selection of Only At Bruton dishes and a few from the Hakkassan signature menu so we have a wider understanding of their menu.
We begin with a divine Crispy duck salad, with pomelo, pine nut and shallot and a platter of mouth-watering melt in your mouth Supreme dim sum. Whilst enjoying our starters our sommelier Enio pops over and suggests a sake pairing for our mains. We both like our sake differently, one hot the other ice cold so Enio obliges our request by suggesting splitting the carafe to suit both our needs.
As we slowly work through the starters, our mains begin to arrive, in perfectly choreographed sequence, Stir-fry langoustine Szechuan style with eryngii mushroom and curry leaf, and a side of rice, followed by Three treasure crispy beancurd wrap, with yam bean and shiitake mushroom and Stir-fry lotus root, asparagus and lily bulb in black pepper. Mirelle, plates us up with the rice and Langoustine and the rest, well we’ll figure out – we’ve got a delicious feast ahead of us and sake to keep us entertained for next hour at least. As we slowly work through all the dishes, complementing the tastes of each, the langoustine is on another level and the root veggies and three treasure crispy parcels a pleasant surprise (who knew veg could taste this good?!). Just when we thought we’re nearing the end of our mains, a succulent plate of Grilled organic Rhug lamb cutlets in soy with baby coriander and chilli appears on our table. Full as we are we can’t help tucking into this lamb which is cooked to perfection and though we have a love hate relationship with lamb generally. This one was definitely more love.
Taking a breather from the main, which we’re proud of ourselves for tackling with gusto, we sit back and are grateful for our loose clothing choices. Shortly after a magnificent, deconstructed dessert appears on our table which one can only describe as a work of art – named Rum baba (malted milk, single origin chocolate, roasted banana) where we were instructed to pipette the Diplomático Reserva rum into the cake ourselves accompanied with a Twist and stout Diplomático Reserva rum, Grand Marnier, espresso co ee, homemade stout syrup
Words can’t describe the sensations we were feeling – this is a must and a great finale to an amazing meal – it’s also part of the Only At Bruton menu.
We’re now making plans for our next trip – this Michelin star cuisine is a treat but it’ll be rude not to check out the Only at Hanway Place offerings or any of the international ones for that matter….
The Only At collection is available at Hakkasan Hanway Place and Hakkasan Mayfair now.
