The latest East London restaurant to open is Gigi’s. A day to night dining venue taking over the former site of Zigfrid von Underbelly, Gigi’s are successfully cementing themselves in Hoxton Square with contemporary cuisine, kick-ass cocktails and live music late into the night.
The menu has been created by Head Chef Antonio Mollo who’s Italian heritage and passion for high quality ingredients has enabled him to develop a menu full of vibrancy and fresh flavour.
To start, we had the Pan-fried Scallops with Lemon Ricotta Cheese, Crispy Leek and a Sweet Chilli Pepper Cream. We have to admit, this was overshadowed by our second starter, Roasted Duck Breast with White & Red Chicory, Crispy Kale and a Sweet Berry Cream which was a seriously delectable dish. The duck was rich but tender and the sweet berry cream brought even more life to the beautifully cooked meat.
For mains, we ate the Pan-fried Sea Bream Fillet with Rosemary & Lemon Sauteed New Potatoes, Pineapple and Coriander. At first a little put off by the mention of pineapple, it turned out to be a welcome addition to the plate. Served warm, it was a comforting summer dish. Our second main was the Grilled Tuna Steak coated in Poppy Seeds and served with a Chicory, Rocket, Blood Orange & Fennel salad.
We spent the night on Gigi’s terrace lapping up the summer evening temperatures. But step inside, and the refurbished venue is a cavern of cutting edge design showcasing pop art murals across the walls and funky disco vibes throughout.
In the basement is the Hoxton Underbelly with live music events on most nights, the perfect spot to stumble upon after a few cocktails and a bite to eat.
It is safe to say, Gigi’s is an excellent addition to the thriving atmosphere around Hoxton Square. We look forward to many more summer evenings there. To book a table, visit their website here.
