Last night I had the pleasure of enjoying the melodic tones of Esperanza Spalding at the Barbican. If you are not familiar with this young and very talented lady please check her out, trust me she will not disappoint. A rising star in the world of jazz and the shock winner of the ‘Best New Artist’ Grammy Award, (much to the dispair of the Bieber fans!), Spalding is one talent to watch closely.
Performing material from her album, Chamber Music Society, Spalding was poised and magnetic. As she continued to play we got lost in the music, lost in our own thoughts and most of all lost in the moment. Her set up was simple, Leo Genovese on piano, Richie Barshay on percussion, cellist Jody Redhage and Sara Caswell and Lois Martin on violin duty. No gimmicks, props or speeches, just great muscians playing great music. Vocalist Leala Cyr rocked the stage with Spalding during an intimate duet-just their voices and the bass, which had everyone in the house on the edge of their seats!
Uplifting music for a perfect spring evening!
I recommend catching her when she returns to the Barbican in July.
