In the midst of London Cocktail Week (6th –12th Oct), some of the capitals best bars are creating delicious concoctions to whet our appetites. We popped over to ECC Chinatown via a quick stop at The Blind Pig whose refreshing bottled gin offering Gin Quininey kick started our evening.
ECC has added some fabulous newbies amongst their classics and old favourites. We sampled the following; a very potent but aptly named, ‘The Grandaddy’, an interesting mix in ‘Yozakura’, a very healthy sounding ‘So Fresh So Green‘, Little House on the Prairie, which wasn’t as innocent as it sounded and our favourite of the night ‘Popeye’s Better Half‘, which had some unusual ingredients (plantation original dark rum, spinach syrup, lemon juice, virgin olive oil, egg white and soda) that wouldn’t be out of place in food recipes but also somehow worked in this liquid format.
Having tasted so many of these delicious drinks it would have been rude not to have had a chat with the Bar Manager Abdulai who having launched the bar at Union Street Cafe was now nicely settling in the comforts of ECC these past 6 months and who was also responsible for creating these for us.
He told us his cocktail inspiration swings between the classics and new and that he enjoys updating classics with new ingredients but maintaining their signature style. His favourite classic is the Manhattan and his current new favourite is Popeye’s other half (we agreed)! We then ended the conversation with one of our signatures ‘what was the last thing that made him stop and stare?‘ he responded firstly X factor but then moments later updated his answer to “looking in the mirror this morning, thinking I look old…” Hmm not sure that is true Abdulai, think we’ll take your first answer on that one!
