Another year, another Bond. The buzz never seems to die down and equally we never pass up an opportunity to enjoy a vodka martini in honour of the main man himself. Daniel Craig is back, looking as sexy as ever and if that’s not an excuse to drink it shaken not stirred, then I don’t know what is…
Thanks to 007 there is no drink so sophisticated as the Martini and this month, we’ll be enjoying them in abundance. Here’s our guide on what to drink and where to get it:
What to drink
Belvedere have released two stunning special edition bottles to celebrate their partnership with Spectre. The first is a very special illuminated magnum with 007 etching available exclusively at Selfridges (£170). The second, Spectre Pure, can be picked up at all major supermarkets but looks equally as sophisticated. We say if you’re knocking back martinis then at least drink a vodka of quality and with Belvedere that’s one thing you can guarantee. Now Bond never seems to have a hangover…
Where to drink it
So where to be drinking such a Martini? The St James’s Hotel & Club in Mayfair will be serving the Belvedere Martini as well as the Connaught Hotel and the American Bar at the Savoy. These are all classy establishments so to avoid any embarrassment at the bar here are some fundamental ordering tips from the crew at Belvedere:
Shaken or stirred? Although often debated, it is acceptable to order it either way. Stirring or shaking produce the same amount of dilution and chilly temperature, however stirring simply takes longer to get there. While the shaking method introduces air into the spirit and alters the texture, stirring gently leaves the spirit undisturbed in its frosty state, leading to a silkier consistency. It’s up to you to decide what type of mood you’re in and order accordingly.
Wet or Dry? Simply meaning ‘how much vermouth would you like in your martini’? By all means, experiment, however there are countless ratios of vodka to vermouth that are just as delicious.
Oliver Twist? No, the server hasn’t name dropped a Dickens classic, but asked whether you’d like an olive, or a twist as the garnish in your martini. The classic garnishes are typically a lemon twist or a green olive, but your choices don’t have to be limited to these two.
How to make it
Want to DIY and enjoy a 007 style Martini in your own home, no cocktail dress required? Here’s the official Belvedere/Spectre recipe:
- 60ml (2oz) Belvedere Vodka
- 10ml (1/3oz) Dry vermouth
- Sicilian green olive
- 5ml (1/6oz) Sicilian green olive brine
Gently muddle olives in base of mixing glass. Add remaining ingredients and shake hard with ice. Double strain into a chilled martini glass.
Honest Grapes – the online wine club – have teamed up with top tailor Timothy Everest at his private atelier in Spitalfields on November 6th to host ‘Drink like Bond’. This immersive evening takes you on a journey through 007’s drinks cabinet. It won’t just be an evening of Vodka Martini’s – guests will be offered the chance to try an array of vintage wines and champagnes that have been featured in both literature and films alongside tailored canapes. Each drink will be introduced by Tom from Honest Grapes alongside accompanying vignettes by Tim, who was responsible for Ralph Fiennes’ tailoring as “M” in Skyfall and for all the major characters in SPECTRE.
