A visit to Dinner by Heston Blumenthal is always a treat and we can never get enough of their beautifully tasty Meat Fruit or their divine Tipsy Cake which literally has us salivating at the very thought. We love everything about this restaurant, the food and drink, the decor and general attention to detail is top notch, the staff always attentive, knowledgeable and very helpful when making difficult choices of picking what to eat from the exciting and very innovative menu that draws on recipes from as far back as the fourteenth century.
Located in a contemporary setting within the Mandarin Oriental Hotel (which is currently being refurbished), in the heart of Knightsbridge, Chef Director Ashley Palmer-Watts has worked closely with Heston for many years to research and create a finely crafted menu. We can totally see why critics and alike love this Michelin star restaurant (Dinner received its first Michelin star in 2012, the year after it opened, and its second in 2013).
Our excuse for visiting (not that we need one), was to try their set menu three course lunch, but we couldn’t resist ordering a few extras, including the Meat Fruit (c.1500) (well it would be rude not to) before the starter. The famous meat fruit not only looks great but is worth the visit alone in our opinion. Feeling brave we order the Dressed Snails (c.1880) over the safer option of Hay Smoked Salmon (c.1730), after all if anyone is ever going to convince us to try snails it’s gotta be Heston. For main we opted for the Roast Quail (c.1590) which was as expected perfect in every way. The other option was the Roast Cod Frumenty (c.1390) which our plus one ordered and was equally pleased with. For dessert we ordered both options, the Bohemian Cake (c.1890) and the Marmalade Pudding (c.1750) and a off menu third option – Tipsy Cake (had to be done). For extra drama it’s also worth ordering the nitrogen ice-cream which is a joy to watch.
Whilst my plus one paired her meal with the recommended wines, I opted to stick with fizz and had champagne the whole way through for our tipsy Friday lunch. The menu is perfectly priced at £40 for the three courses set menu. The Tipsy cake, Meat Fruit and drinks are on top and a habit we just can’t seem to break. Still the over indulgence is totally worth it!
