Upon entering, we are warmly greeted by glamourous air hostesses who issue us passports and a boarding card that are to take us to our destination: Andalucía! This is the fifth offering from pop-up masters Shuttlecock Inc. It continues along the same vein as the previous offerings from destinations Göteborg, Beirut, Sicily and Mozambique. Authentic world cuisine, in this case Spanish, served on board an imaginary flight from the 1960s, complete with glamorous air hostesses, dashing captains and well-shaken cocktails plus the promise of being whisked back to the glory days of air travel – aah those were the days!
As we excitedly check in at the desk, and head over to the retro departure lounge awaiting the call for us to begin our culinary, immersive journey. We pass the time chit chatting and sipping delicious cocktails (after all we need something to calm our pre-flight nerves), we chose a Rebujito – a delicious take on a mojito (Fino Sherry, Mint, Sugar, Lime, Soda) and a Martinisimo (Gin, Martini Rosso, Bitters, Lime. Olive). There’s also a variation of sangria, Tinto de Verano cocktail or an Alhambra beer on offer. Tasty pre-dinner snacks come in the form of Spanish tortilla’s on a stick, salt cod, jamón and cheese and chorizo and black pudding on bread.
After an hour or so, we board the plane and settle into our communal dining experience for our four course Andalucía banquet.
The mouth watering courses are heaven sent; head chef Ollie Templeton returns with sabor, pasión y espíritu with Destination: Andalucia.
The first course arrives, a delicious salmorejo with watermelon and jamón, followed by an equally delicious hake a la plancha, chard, migas and chorizo aioli. The next course is roast ibérico pork, possibly the tastiest roast pork we’ve tasted in a while and finally dessert; a yogurt mousse with cherries. Wine is provided throughout with a choice of wine and red on the table.
Stuffed and unable to move we settle in for the evening entertainment, after all Mile High isn’t just about the food, it’s a full immersive experience. There’s a Spanish band playing authentic music, some flamenco dancing and some (ahem) not so Spanish entertainment from the air hostesses including a stint of dancing to hey Macarena!
Viva España! Destination Andalucía is most definitely worth checking into – it opens its doors between 30th July – 9th August 2014.
Mile High: Andalucía is sponsored by the Spanish Tourist Office and the region of Andalucía. The birthplace of tapas, Andalucía is at the heart of Spain’s gastronomic culture offering a feast for food lovers. @Spain_inUK and @ViveAndalucia or visit www.spain.info / www.andalucia.org/en.
