On a cold January evening few years ago, I was sitting in a pub in Waterloo with a friend of mine who is a DJ and Producer. “I’ve found this amazing girl”, he said, “She’s so bloody good she doesn’t even need a last name”. The girl as it turned out, was 19 year old Delilah.
He, is half of British dance music phenomena Chase & Status, and a year after that night, Delilah was featured on their hit single Time before proceeding to tour with the duo as part of their live show.
Fast forward on to a rainy night this September and Delilah, now 22, has had her own solo success in the form of debut album, From The Roots Up, which was released in July 2013.
I caught up with her backstage at Under The Bridge, after a private gig for MasterCard Priceless London.
Where are you, and what are you doing today?
Under the Bridge at Chelsea Football Ground, uuuurgh, (she’s an Arsenal Fan). I am sitting talking to you, but I was singing for a gig with MasterCard.
What is your earliest memory of music?
I went to see Tito Puente play at Wembley Arena.
Can you tell us about your current releases?
There’s nothing being released right now, but there’s a free download coming in about a month. It’s a cover, and it’s got a cool video to it because I thought we’d do something for the fans. I’ve been in hibernation making album two. And album two will be ready when it’s finished next year.
What’s your favourite hangout in London?
If I’m just chilling out, I like to go to Shoreditch House a lot. I used to live just nearby, so I’d literally get up, in my pyjamas – I’m really lazy so I’d get in the car, drive to Shoreditch House, and then have breakfast in my pyjamas. But the other thing, I do like The Box. The Box is a lot of fun.
The Box London? Or The Box New York?
Both, but The Box London ‘cause they’re like my family.
Where’s your favourite hangout worldwide?
I love Ibiza. I like to go and have a party in Ibiza. I’m going in a couple of weeks for the closing parties.
Any new bands you’re currently listening to that we need to know about?
They’re not new, but a band called Ink. I think they’re two brothers, or a brother and a cousin – something like that. They’re really, really cool. Kind of soulful R&B stuff and I love their Album. It’s called The Place.
Other than your new release, what is in store for you next year?
Other than the album, just everything that comes with it! Tours. A couple of collaborations, but we shall see… I never hold my breath on how other people work their music. If you’re featured on someone’s song, you let them do what they’re doing with it. So I’ve done a couple of collaborations, and then just touring, new videos, and then the whole new campaign.
What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday (other than sit in Shoreditch House in your PJs)?
Nothing!! Nothing. Walk the dog. I like to walk the dog. I have a Great Dane called Pelé. She is a Don.
What do you do to get away from everything?
Walk the dog. Hahaha. Although she’s runs quite a lot. Scooby Doo – whoever wrote that character was very accurate. She is Scooby Doo. Other than that, just eat. I like to go and have a Sunday lunch and just chill out.
Where’s your Sunday roast spot?
I’m from Camden originally. It’s nowhere near Camden…but because I used to live in Old Street, I go to The Well in Clerkenwell. It’s really, really good.
What was the last thing that really made you stop and stare?
It’s quite gruesome…. I dunno if I want to say this because it’s a bit sad. Ooooh nooooo….. Okay… I was in Dalston, probably about a weekend ago, and this is NOT good, and it’s not a funny situation, but there was this man shouting and screaming. It’s Friday night in Dalston, I’m out with a friend having dinner – quiet – it wasn’t too busy. He’s sprinting down the road – literally Usain Bolt kind of sprint – going *sings* “Police, police, police”. He was stabbed in his bottom!! I know it sounds awful, but I’d never seen anyone run so fast in my life!! So that made me stop. His trousers were a bit low so you could see it, but he seemed absolutely fine. He was running! That made me stop and stare…
Other than that, a positive thing that made me stop and stare…. I was awake the other day, and there was a really beautiful sunrise. That sounds really mushy. But I was in Hampstead Heath at sunrise time. We’d had a little party in the park before the weather got cold, and we all watched the sunrise and it was pretty amazing!!
