This was the first warm day since our snow-heavy entrance into spring and I’m more than willing to dash out into the streets. I am heading to Cucina Asellina to try their new brunch menu. I’m feeling rather positive and happy to be sitting next to a window with a joyous blue sky with sunshine emanating through the large surrounding windows.
Inspired by New York’s sophisticated Asellina restaurant, Cucina Asellina has opened in the heart of Aldwych on the ground floor of the ME London hotel. Artisanal Italian cuisine is served in a stunning, contemporary setting designed by architects Foster + Partners, where the industrial design is juxtaposed to a warm palette, offset by tiled floors and copper tone sky-high ceilings. Check out the row of giant dome lights, painted in gold leaf, they were nesting above our dining table!
Their new brunch menu is inspiration by the traditional Italian style of dining, tavolata, where people will gather around a great feasting table, encouraging the ultimate weekend dining experience. We certainly took this for a test ride. There are traditional brunch options, a selection of egg-based dishes Italian style, ‘Tratori’ sharing dishes, such as Pizza, Pastas and fish all complimented with delicious greens and a seasonal side salad.
Between us we sampled their smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, truffle eggs with parmesan, rocket and prosciutto and finally I went for the oven baked eggs (gluten-free), similar to a lasagne with eggs and tomato with a corn-based layers instead of pasta. A deliciously rich and comforting dish if this suits your palate.
We excelled ourselves further and collectively took on their ‘Tratori’ recommendations of oven baked Seabass, seasonal salad, and broccoli and asparagus lasagne! Their portion sizes were very generously delicious and enough to stop anyone complaining for lack of value for money.
Decadent, bold and passionate, these dishes were homely and fulfilling. I would definitely add this to your ‘to go to’ brunch list. The crowd may not be as ‘showy’ as its neighbours at The Delaunay, but It will leave you feeling just as contented! Cucina Asellina will be open all day, from brunch till late supper, seven days a week.
