I was worried when I got a message saying the tent site at Camp Wildfire was full and they were opening up a new patch of land.
Had my favourite festival become TOO popular and awash with the masses?
To my relief, I can report that although the festival has grown, it hasn’t got too big that it’s impersonal and lost it’s humble character.
In fact, it’s bigger and better than ever…
For those of you who haven’t heard of Camp Wildfire, I’ve previously described it as being Scouts meets Hogwarts meets Glastonbury.
Everyone is very friendly and no one takes themselves too seriously.
The whole thing is about teamwork and getting stuck in.
Like the Scouts, there are outdoor activities, with dozens of things available to sign up for from dawn until dusk.
Think hot tubbing, zorbing, trapeze swinging, bee keeping… The more random the better.
Like Hogwarts, there are houses, with the four being Foxes, Squirrels, Hawks and Badgers.
And like Glastonbury, there’s a mellow festival-vibe with a great musical line-up every night. More than 60 acts this year.
The ‘climbing wall’ and ‘yoga’ were among my favourite activities this time around.
There’s a beautiful glade in the Camp Wildfire woodland, which proves to be the most perfect spot to bend and stretch that hangover away.
I also started my Saturday morning off with a bang, after signing up for a spot of rifle and pistol shooting.
On the calmer end of the scale, I spent the afternoon fashioning a piece of acrylic jewellery.
My friend Lauren broke five saw blades in the process – which I don’t think our instructor was too thrilled about – but in true Camp Wildfire style he just smiled and let the good times roll.
In true Camp Wildfire style, my Friday night was also a blur.
Awesome live music, magical lights in the forest and a midnight walk to a destination I don’t remember…
The bang from my rifle the next morning definitely helped blow the cobwebs away.
Unfortunately this year I had to leave Camp Wildfire on the Saturday night but my sources say it was probably one of the best years yet.
From my brief encounter of Camp Wildfire 2019 I would concur.
The organisation of all of the events was spot on, with a smoother sign-up process in motion.
The sunny weather was also a big bonus!
Here’s to next year and sipping a heady blend of adventuring by day and partying by night.
Cheers to that!
