Even your most ‘been there, done that’ friend will be seduced by the Tower Bridge views from the wood panelled interior of Butlers Wharf Chop House. Part of London’s ever-growing D&D Restaurant Group, Chop House has it’s own distinct flavour. Head Chef Joginder Singh Dham selects the best of British seasonal produce with an emphasis on grilled steak and seafood.
An installation of wrought iron saucepans and kettles set the casual dining scene at the entrance. All signs point to us being well fed and so we take our seat by the window with amazing views looking out on the Thames and Tower Bridge and begin our culinary journey.
To start, we decide on the Leverstoke Park Farm Buffalo mozzarella with seasonal tomatoes and the Steamed Shetland mussels. Our charismatic sommelier, Stathios recommends Chapel Down Rose Sparkling wine from Kent which is delicate and smooth and the perfect drink to begin, so good in fact we continue with it right up until dessert. The mussels are delicious and generously piled high and the mozzarella starter is an Insta-worthy ensemble with punchy anchovies.
For mains, we opt for the rib-eye steak and cod and lobster bisque (the daily special). The steak is simply presented (there’s really no need for fuss when the cut is grilled to perfection) and comes with deliciously smokey peppercorn sauce and we order a side of triple cooked chips and spinach. The cod and lobster bisque is light and balanced with the meaty and perfectly cooked cod – simply divine.
We can hardly fit desert in – but our friendly Sommelier returns and persuades us try the desserts and accompanying tipples, the rich vintage port pairs perfectly with the chocolate brownie, whilst the pistachio bakewell tart couples nicely with the sweet Chateau Pierre Bise.
Chop House is a grill restaurant that successfully blends a chic and inviting atmosphere with fantastic quality food. The service is attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. The Thames views are a draw but it’s the food that well keep us going back as well as the well-rehearsed wine list!
