East London is fast becoming the place to be for discerning diners and travellers, even Nobu is getting in on the action. We had heard that Montcalm Royal London House Hotel had opened on Finsbury Square in November and was eager to check it out alongside their casual all day café, restaurant and bar Burdock which is located on the ground floor.
We decided Sunday would be the perfect day to while away few hours at Burdock. Designers Tonik Associates are responsible for the interior which is the perfect blend of urban cool and sophistication. We especially loved the flamingo lamps and the industrial copper lighting.
Settling into the comfy low slung armchairs we prepared ourselves for a lazy feast. The extensive menu includes a divine selection of small and large plates. Choosing what to eat was not an easy task, everything sounded wonderful, fortunately we had some great recommendations from Zack the manager and ordered the following small plates venison meatballs, blue cheese and pickled garlic; octopus with potato with chorizo; Octopus, potato, paprika; Duck ramen, Scotch egg; Heritage beetroot, Ragstone and Yellow fin tartare, sesame as well as some smoked almonds; Grilled pitta, hummus, avocado, beetroot; Kentucky fried skate wings to snack on. For the larger plates we went for the monkfish kiev with curried slaw; pork belly and lobster; Superfood Session (salad jar) – Quinoa, avocado, kale, matcha and mixed beans, toasted seeds and nuts and some triple cooked chips.
We washed those down wth some delicious cocktails, again recommended by Zack. As if that wasn’t enough food (we did say we were settling in for a feast), we finished off the meal with Burdock’s incredible creations of the Not A Snickers Bar Sundae (luxurious layers of peanut butter brownie, malted ice cream, chocolate caramel sauce and peanut brittle) and a Sticky Toffee Sundae (toffee pudding, salted caramel, crème fraîche ice cream).
Whilst we stuck with cocktails, a enomatic wine dispenser means that all white, red and rose wines (plus a couple of sparkling options) are available by the glass as well as the bottle as well as fully stocked back bar with spirits – providing the perfect remedy to any of the day’s ailments.
Burdock is said to embrace the casual all day buzz of café culture and we can confirm it certainly does that, it’s a fab place to feast with friends eating delicious food and sipping away contently at whatever takes your fancy. From morning lattes to lights out, days start early and finish late. Burdock is ready to welcome early risers, after hours stayers and all nighters from 6.30am ‘til midnight Monday – Friday and from 7am at weekends. Serving up flexible drinking and dining options that suit any schedule – no matter how hectic!
