Boomtown was epic this year! The festival returned to the Matterley Estate near Winchester recently and the 60,000 capacity event really had something for everyone, a Kidztown area with separate camping, Whistlers Green was more of a chilled out environment with a speakers corner, Yoga and a Spa, District 9, China Town and The Psychedelic Forest were all ideal for the ravers and The Lions Den (based in a trench!) was where most of the main acts performed such as – Toots and Maytals, Protoje, Protoje, Ziggy Marley, The Specials and M.I.A. Furthermore – Political activist and poet Benjamin Zephaniah was a memorable act at The Windmill, based at the top of Whistler’s Green, where global radio DJ Gilles Peterson also played a monumental set.
The immersive storyline was brought to life across the city with hundreds of dedicated performance artists situated on balconies and stages. The city was divided into uptown and downtown zones, and I must say the beautiful set played a massive part in the experience, it really was an adults playground. The screens and nightly shows taking place across three of the main stages, Town Centre, Bang Hai Towers and Sector 6, told the story of the new CEO of fictitious multinational Bang Hai Industries presenting the unfolding narrative of what was going on in Chapter 9: Behind the Mask.
I would highly recommend this Festival if you are looking for something spectacular to get up to next Summer.
For safety, Boomtown had a great medical center and the event also teamed up The Loop, so those festival goers had the chance to safely test their drugs.
