Billie Black is a newcomer to the London music scene. With her jazzy tone and soulful sound, this 19-year-old’s voice might not be the first you would associate with the haunting electronic beats she accompanies. But it was acts such as James Blake, Jessie Ware, Sampha and Kwabs, those combining classic vocals with electronic production, that inspired this West London girl when she was studying at The Brits – the school that gave us Adele, Imogen Heap, Kate Nash and Ella Eyre.
It was the reggae, soul and disco records that Billie would hear at her Mum’s family parties that started her love affair with music. She began singing from an early age and joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra at thirteen. But when she was coming to the end of her time at school, she began to write her own songs, put together a band and started working with producers such as Imposters and John Calvert to create a sound that combined her roots in jazz with the bass and dance sounds she loved.
The new song ‘I Don’t Need Another Lover‘ comes shortly after her first track ‘I Waited For You’ (watch the video below). Not one for to keep us waiting, her debut EP will be released this summer too.
Billie will be playing her debut headline show at Electrowerkz on the 15th of July. Tickets are available from eventbrite.co.uk
