A man in a pub says “Alright Treacle?” as I casually pass by… my response immediately being,” fine thanks,” in a sharp and unwelcoming tone, feeling a slight shudder of annoyance shoots down my spine. My negative association to this statement, which is taken from cockney rhyming slang ‘treacle tart,’ has now blossomed into visions of Anna Hamilton (Creative Director of Alright Treacle) and her fabulous culinary creations in the form of soul hugging supper club’s, private events and cinema nights across Edinburgh.
I attended her chocolate themed Supperclub during a festive weekend in Edinburgh. I arrived at a blue painted door with a festival -feel arch of flowers above a bright yellow ALRIGHT TREACLE logo! Obviously, I had found the right door! The dinner was hosted in a cosy candle lit room, decorated with digital prints on the walls and fresh exploding ivy leaves on the table. You receive a welcome glass of prosecco from Lydia, the fabulous host for the evening. All additional drinks are BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle)!
Anna seduced us from the beginning of the evening by serving warm homemade bread loafs with fennel seeds, honey and half melted dark chocolate chips. The bread was accompanied with dips such as freshly whipped butter, hearty olive oil and aubergine baba ghanouj!
The dining flight was themed around chocolate, each dish was a winter warmer, hearty and vibrant with perfect texture and flavour contrasts. The dining flight included crayfish tails, dill oil, saffron potatoes & white chocolate foam. The main was a locally sourced and highly in-season coco dusted grouse perching on a bed of creamy chestnut puree, sprout tops, charred leeks & pistachio.
Dessert was mulled wine poached pears, blue cheese ice-cream, candied walnuts, walnut shortbread (gluten-free) & tempered dark chocolate. A masterpiece! Hungry? I would eat the same meal again twice. Winner!
We Interviewed Anna Hamilton to get the scoop on her northern takeover of suppers and recipes…
Tell me about alright treacle and where it came from?
Alright Treacle started as a creative outlet for me to feed my friends and family whilst working in admin, in London. Not long after creating the brand I decided to move up to Edinburgh to get some respite from London, and see whether the bespoke supper concept would work in a less saturated market. Since then it’s gone from strength to strength and now Alright Treacle host private suppers, accept commissions and cater at a variety of events.
For me personally, Alright Treacle is also an outlet to practice my photography, styling and writing – it’s an all round creative project with the additional fun of feeding people.
Who is Alright Treacle?
Alright Treacle is run by founder and creative director Anna Hamilton, and managed in part by supper club hostess Lydia Honeybone
